Spring 2011: Tips for Planning a Deck
April 25, 2011 As spring tries to peek through, now is the perfect time to start planning that deck you’ve always wanted. This gives you plenty of time to hire a contractor and get your gorgeous deck before summer.
Remodeling Around the Location
The location is important, as you’ll want a deck that blends into your landscaping. Try to work around mature plantings for a more natural look. By curving the deck around a large tree or plants, you add interest, fragrance and protection from the sun.
Planning a Deck
Space planning is important, particularly if you have a small yard. It helps to:
- Use vertical space. A multi-tier deck adds interest and bring balance to the visual weight of your back wall.
- Check with your building department about any zoning or remodeling issues, such as side or rear yard setbacks.
- Think about the best location for privacy. Is one neighbor farther away than another?
Hiring a Contractor
There are many contractors out there and we suggest you being cautious by checking if they are fully licensed and insured. At our previous blog post we give you priceless advice on how to avoid costly remodeling mistakes. Also look for their:
- Responsiveness – How quickly do they return calls? That will give you clues as to how they will be to work with when remodeling.
- References. Call at least 3 different references.
- Willingness to explain– Even though you are not the one building the deck, it helps to know some details. Ask how they are planning to do the job, how long it would take, etc.

The final touch is to decide how you are going to decorate your deck. Outdoor rooms are all the rage right now and it’s easy to use furniture, rugs and throw pillows to create an impact. Now if you are really willing to invest in your house value and make a great impact to your family and friends, we would strongly suggest you to install an outdoor kitchen.
